Although I can't claim to have overly researched the LBS space I understand the concepts of the biz model to understand what you mean. I believe that your description of no model behind only "friend nearby" ever effectively being "it" but the addition of what "friend nearby means" through additional data which Google has the power to provide Latitude will be vastly more sucessful than any current "mobile social network" I am in Ghana, AGPS is horrible but I have installed Latitude and it works!
